John Morgan in Radnor in the early years

KEERE, Pieter van den.
Radnor Breknok Cardigan and Caermarthen described.
London, George Humble, 1627. 85 x 125.
Originally engraved 1599. Britain.
There are many John Morgans in the Philadelphia vicinity but John Morgan as a resident in Radnor 1686 is the earliest. I finally figured this out with wills and tax lists and have isolated two of them --the two who everybody is claiming are the fathers of James Morgan-who was needless to say James Morgan, supposedly the father of General Daniel Morgan. (All wrong, by the way.) I was confused too so I just imagined how everybody who works out there and has no time would be confused. I decided to tackle the problem.

I might as well tell you ahead of time that the wills, as well as the Bucks County Richland MM in Bucks Co marriage records, prove James Morgan of Durham Furnace is NOT the son of either of these John Morgans. Both did have a son James. One James Morgan was born 1721 in Abington, Montgomery Co PA, but his life is accounted for by his descendants. He became a miller, not an iron monger Another James Morgan was born about 1702 in Radnor, Chester PA but was dead by 1731. His father was also a John Morgan born 1669 and died 1743. James is also not mentioned in his brother's will in 1731.

The son of the Radnor John Morgan, John Morgan Jr., born after 1703 (proof Will of his grandfather John Evans) of Radnor, Delaware/Chester Co PA --his 1st wife was Sarah Evans b: 11 Jan 1694/95 in Merion, Chester Co.. His wife at the time of his death was Patience Perminter. "Patience" is named in his will in 1731 (extract below) along with his daughters Hannah and Mary. I have no proof that her last name was Perminter. There is Hearsay that she married James Morgan or John Morgan and a family story which I repeat below.

But first, let me tell you about Radnor. In 1681, a Welshman, Richard Davies, purchased 1000 acres of land from William Penn in England, lying chiefly in the southern part of Radnor, which he soon sold to various purchasers, there being no record of his ever visiting this county. Friends Radnor Meeting in what is the tri-corner of Montgomery,Chester and Delaware Co. Thomas Morgan (b ca 1680) of Carnaevon Twsp. is said to have come from Radnor to Lancaster Co. now Berks in 1718 -- he applied for a grant at that time. The highway, Radnor Street or Road, was laid out in 1683, and divides the township into nearly equal parts, the road running almost north and south through the township. Radnor occupies the extreme northern part of Delaware county, bordering both Montgomery and Chester counties. From its extreme southern point to the Chester county line it borders Newtown township, and from the same point to the Montgomery county line borders Marple and Haverford townships. Its first settlers were natives of Radnorshire, Wales, members of the Society of Friends, Radnor being included in the “Welsh Tract.” In neighboring Newtown was also a Thomas Morgan and brother George.

Current onlone map Chester Co PA
This history is about John Morgan of Radnor whose will is filed in Chester Co. PA in 1744. He had a brother James Morgan whom he names in his will. So far I have found a tax list for 1693 in Radnor where the name John Morgan appears-- next to John Jerman, husband of Margaret -was she John Morgan's sister? However, local Radnor historians say he was already in Radnor by 1686. In other words this John Morgan may have come sooner than the John Morgan listed as a child with his sister and 3 brothers in 1691 on a ship.

Library of Congress had on file the names of four children`s birthdays copied from a family Bible which ended up in Maryland in 1897. There are three brothers with exact birthdays John, James. Evan and a sister Margaret. But other brothers have been thought to be brothers as well (Cadwalader and Lewis.) So why would 2 or more children be left out of a Bible? One possibility is that a page could have been torn out for proof of birth for one of the Morgans and was never replaced. I have read many a report of men bringing in torn out pages of Bibles to prove who they were in order to get Revolutionary War pensions. Some brought the whole Bible, others did not. I am also sceptical because of the Bible "wording" I saw which did not have the aps except for one son. If they were really Welsh, they would have had aps and I do not know where in the Library of Congress the Bible is. It should have read something like this:
Bible owner: James ap Morgan, son of Morgan ap Lewis
Children:
Margaret ap James
John ap James
Evan ap James
James ap James
These "James" men later using the last name of their father, but that would not have been recorded in a Welsh Bible in 1669.

In looking for most Morgans on ships lists, it is often fruitless. We have to remember is that these Welsh men had different names when they arrived and only after awhile settled on a permanent name. For instance, Cadwallader Morgan may have been Cadwallader ap Lewis son of Lewis ap Morgan. John Morgan may have been son of Morgan ap James. Sometimes the ships lists left the ap out. It is possible that our Edward Morgan in Radnor came as Edward son of John ap Edwards. If his grandfather was Edward ap Morgan, he may have settled on the name Edward Morgan to call himself.

Here is the recording in a book about the above four children'a arrival. Jane Morgan is recorded on another entry as dying at sea. if John Morgan arrived as a child in 1691 why was he already a citizen of Radnor in 1686 according to local historians? John's uncle John Morgan was already in in Radnor with other family members who had arrived in 1683, a few years before John's father James sailed from Wales in 1691. James Morgan (b 1645) and his wife Jane, with their children, Margaret, John, Evan and James, natives of Nantmeal, Radnorshire, Wales, set sail for this country in 1691. Both parents died at sea and were buried 14 NOV 1691 in a Maryland Port Cayots at the head of the Bay Bohemia. All of the children settled in Chester County, Penn., and James and Evan became distinguished clergymen. John purchased a farm near "Morgan's Corner" in Radnor township, now Delaware County.

CHILDREN of Morgan ap Lewis
I. JOHN ap MORGAN born ca 1660 was already a known resident in Radnor in 1686 near Evan Prothero/
PRTHERETH. This John Morgan is not the same one who arrived in 1691 with his fatherJames, probably John's brother. John married on 16 JUL 1686 to a Sarah Evans, also before the young John Morgan arrived in 1691 with father James. (Sarah Evans was a typically Quaker name and there quite a few.) Did this older John Morgan move from Radnor Chester Co to Abington Meeting in Montgomery Co? It is known he was in the same Abington Meeting as George Boone, kin to Daniel Boone. Was it this John Morgan who married 2nd wife Deborah Woodruff? Before John Morgan married Deborah, it is mentioned in Abington Meeting minutes that he was married before and there seemed to be some kind of discussion about their marriage and some difficulties- was it because he was an older man? The pair moved away from Abington shortly after 1721, out to the wilderness at that time of Richland Twsp Bucks PA where they started a new unofficial meeting house about 1721. The will of John Morgan dated January 11, 1741, was probated March 9, 1743, and is of record at Doylestown, Bucks Co PA. He described himself as "aged and infirm"... if he had been born 1660 , he would have been 81 and 59 when he married Deborah. If he had been born 1660 , he would have been 81 and 59 when he married Deborah. If it is the same John Morgan who was in Radnor in 1686, here is his will:
John Morgan, of Richland Twp., Yeoman.
11th mo. (January), 4, 1741. Proved March 9, 1743.
Present wife Deborah, late Deborah Woodruff, exr. Sons Isaac, John,

Proven children of John Morgan of Abington Meeting and Richland Meeting:
A. James Morgan was born in Abington, Pennsylvania, in 1721, but was taken by his parents to Richland while an infant. His marriage to Ann Heacock occured on 5 mo. 23, 1745. James operated a mill. James Morgan inherited 200 acres of land in Richland under his father's will, and on the death without issue of his younger brother Isaac, he inherited the share of the land Isaac had received from their father. James died Chester Co 7 mo. 2, 1790.
B. Susanna married 9 MAR 1744/45 at: Richland MM, Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pa. to Jonathan Heacock, the second son of Jonathan the emigrant.
C. Sarah married 11 APR 1747 at: Richland MM, Bucks Co., Pa. to Charles Dennis
D. Deborah unmarried at time of her mother's will

Evan's brother James Protheroe (Prothero, Protheroh) lived in Radnor, PA on land bought from Wm. Penn. Evan's daughter Elizabeth married Morgan ap James b: 1658 in Haveford Tw,Chester Co,Pa.

III. JAMES ap MORGAN Sr.
was born ca 1645 in Wales, came to America from Wales aboard the ship "The Morning Star". He died 14 Nov 1691 and is buried at Bay of Bohemia, western shore of Maryland. He married JANE. She died 1691. Will is registered in Philadelphia
Children of JAMES MORGAN and JANE in red as proven by passenger list- births from Bible page copy at Library of Congress. a partial transcription of an old Bible of 4 children and their exact birth dates. But further research indicates 2 more children lewis and Cadwallader are possible. It looks like the "ap" was left out (a mistake because it would make it more believeable). Records in the Library of Congress indicate there was a Morgan Bible, owned by a descendent in Maryland in 1897. However, the where abouts of that Bible are unknown at this time. There could have been older children on another page not offered for proof:

Note: the following note does not say whose Samuel's father was or which Samuel she was referring to, but the Protherahs lived in Radnor and John Morgan Sr of Radnor has a brother James. Samuel s/o John Morgan Sr had no Samuel Jr or he would have been mentioned in the will. Phyllis Stewart is probably descended from Samuel Morgan of Morris Co NJ, another line of Morgans but found this information about a line not her own.
Note:
Phyllis Stewart (elstew@nts-online.net) who is a descendant of Samuel Morgan Sr. through his son Samuel Morgan Jr. shows the father of James as John Morgan who married Sarah Evans (Jones) and that John Morgan's father was James Morgan who died 6-8-1751 and was married to Sarah Prothro. She states that she found this in a book on Wales.

Joshua Evans- is this the same? The town of Paoli grew around a 1769 inn kept by Joshua Evans, whose father bought 500 acres (2 km²) from William Penn in 1719 near the current site of the Paoli Post Office. Evans named his inn after General Pasquale Paoli, a Corsican, after he had received the 45th and final toast at a St. Patrick's Day celebration.
unknown Evans married Samuel John

It may well have been John Morgan of Abington Meeting (see my blog for him). There are 2 John Morgan marriages I find. One is to Sarah Evans 17 Dec 1717 in Radnor, Chester, Pennsylvania but I am thinking this Abington MM John may have married her and moved to Richland Twshp in Bucks Co PA. when he remarried to Deborah. Nor has it been proven which James Morgan died died 30 Apr 1718 Gwynedd, Pa. There is also a recorded birth of a Sarah Morgan as 20 Jan 1708/09 Radnor Chester. Who was she?
The Boone Family, by Hazel Atterbury Spraker (Rutland, VT, 1922),
reprinted by the Genealogical Pub. Co. (Baltimore, 1974) from the
Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography (Vol. 8, p. 329):
There was an Edward MORGAN, son of Cadwalader MORGAN, named in

the records of the Radnor Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends in
Chester Co., PA births:
"Morgan MORGAN born 6th, 25th mo., 1679 to Cadwallader
"Edward MORGAN born 6th, 22nd mo., 1682 to Cadwallader"
This Edward MORGAN was too young to be the father of Sarah Morgan
BOONE whose brother Daniel was born in 1691 and who had siblings born even
earlier. In any event the sons of Cadwalader MORGAN apparently were
deceased by 10 Sept. 1711 when he made his will.
Phila. Co., Penna., Will Book (No. 211, Bk. C, p. 259).
A resident of Merion Twp. in Philadelphia Co., Cadwalader MORGAN made bequests
to Gwynedd Monthly
Meeting, Merion Meeting House, his brother John MORGAN and several
sons-in-law, but no sons. A brother Lewis. Additionally, the sons of Cadwalader MORGAN
did not USE the surname MORGAN but in the Welsh tradition went by the names
Morgan Cadwalader & Edward Cadwalader.

List of 1686 Radnor tax payers or land owners:
John Jerman or Jarman (wife was Margaret), Stephen ap Evan, David Meredith,Richard Miles, John Morgan, Evan Protherah, Richard Ormes, William Davis, Howell James and others, all Welsh Friends, were the first to settle in Radnor and were all located on their lands by 1686. The first white child born in Radnor was John Jerman, Sr., November 12, 1684. Sarah, daughter of Stephen ap Evans-is that Stephen Bevan?- was the first girl born there. In the French and Indian war many Radnor men served, including eight young Friends, who on their safe return were “disowned” by the Society.

John Jerman, Jr., son of John Jerman in the above list, died in Radnor in the year 1769. A few days after his death the Pennsylvania Chronicle, in an obituary notice, spoke of him "as a gentleman well known for his astronomical calculations." Mr. Jerman had published an almanac.

Evan Protherah Alias: PRYTHERCH; PRYDDERCH (b. 1650 in Dolwilym,Carmarthen,Wales died 20 Jan 1709 in Chester, Radnor Twp., PA and was married to Elizabeth Morgan- her father was Morgan ap Lewis and they were connected to Nathaniel Prothro who married Zilpha Morgan, having removed to SC and died 25 FEB 1823 in Elberton, GA)

John Morgan 1669 and wife Sarah Jones/Evans had one daughter Sarah and one son James by the year 1703 when they are mentioned in her father's will. See Will below provided by Christos Christou, Jr.. I assume young James is dead by the time of his father`s will in 1744 because he is not mentioned. This could be in error by the transcription to extract. It happens now and then and have seen it in my own family where a child was left out by accident in the extract. John Morgan Sr. was probably married about 5 years by 1703, probably since before 1698. I suspect it is a second marriage for him if he was a land owner in 1686. Perhaps his first wife had no children. Sarah is said to maybe have been born 1773 which would make her 11 when John Morgan already was paying taxes, unless there are 3 John Morgans in a row. For instance a John Morgan (of course going under another name since the Welsh used as last names their father's first names) paying taxes in 1686 who was born 1650 who would have been married. Another John Morgan born 1673 who would have been 13 when the taxes were paid in Radnor 1686 and was later married to Sarah Jones (ap Evans), and then a John Morgan born after 1703 who married Sarah Evans b 1798.

I think Cadwallader, Lewis and John are brothers and I think there were 2 Johns, one with each family.
1. MARGARET MORGAN b: 1 MAR 1664/65 in Nantmell County, Radnorshire, Wales did she marry John Jerman?
2. JOHN MORGAN b: 22 NOV 1669 in Nantmell County, Radnorshire, Wales married Sarah, daughter of John Evans, of Nantmell, Radnorshire, "gentleman," hiskinsman. John nephew, Thomas (1702 - 1774) also married an Evans, but no relationship has been proven. (Source: Welsh Settlement ofPennsylvania; Merion in the Welsh Tract; and Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania) he was age 16-17 when he was on the land in 1686.
3. EVAN MORGAN b: 29 NOV 1672 was he the merchant in Philadelphia? No he was NOT.

Remarks: John Morgan. E. Caln. October 22, 1756. Adm. to Lydia Morgan. (sister in law?) Those old stories are never all true, but there is always a basic trueness about them. Sometimes they are twisted or they leave out a generation or a few children. Occasionally they are completely wrong, but that is rare. I did find a wrong one the other day concerning the parents of James Morgan of Durham Furnace who are really Thomas and Jenet Morgan..

RADNOR:
Once a country retreat for Philadelphia's most prominent families, Radnor is an important starting point for Edward Morgans. Radnor is partly in Tredyffrin Township Chester Co and partly in Delaware Co The well known ancestor Edward Morgan (Cadwalader) went to the Port of Philadelphia, PA September 20, 1683 aboard "The Morning Star" (the same ship but another date as that which James Morgan (born ca 1620) sailed 1691 with his sons-later than John Morgan of radnor who had sailed 9 years before) from Liverpool, England.

Edward (Cadwalader) soon married Elizabeth Jarman. Elizabeth had arrived in Philadelphia aboard the same ship and on the same date. The family was living in Gwynedd, Berks (nowMontgomery) PA by 1690. Later Edward and Elizabeth became members of the Friends Radnor Meeting in what is the tri-corner of Montgomery,Chester and Delaware Co. Thomas Morgan (b ca 1680) of Carnaevon Twsp. is said to have come from Radnor to Lancaster Co. now Berks in 1718 -- he applied for a grant at that time. Others say he arrived on a ship in 1718.

Radnor occupies the extreme northern part of Delaware county, bordering both Montgomery and Chester counties. From its extreme southern point to the Chester county line it borders Newtown township, and from the same point to the Montgomery county line borders Marple and Haverford townships. Its first settlers were natives of Radnorshire, Wales, members of the Society of Friends, Radnor being included in the “Welsh Tract.” In 1681, a Welshman, Richard Davies, purchased 1000 acres of land from William Penn in England, lying chiefly in the southern part of Radnor, which he soon sold to various purchasers, there being no record of his ever visiting this county. The highway, Radnor street or road, was laid out in 1683, and
divides the township into nearly equal parts, the road running almost north and south through the township. John Jerman or Jarman, Stephen ap Evan, David Meredith,Richard Miles, John Morgan (married Sarah -ap John- known as Sarah Jones but the American usage would say she was the daughter of John ap Evans- you see both names on Ancestry) Evan Protherah (b. 1650 in West South Wales died 20 Jan 1709 in Chester, Radner Twp., PA married Elizabeth Morgan and was ancestor of Nathaniel

Prothro who married Zilpha Morgan, having removed to SC and died 25 FEB 1823 in Elberton, GA), Richard Ormes, William Davis, Howell James and others, all Welsh Friends, were the first to settle in Radnor and were all located on their lands by 1686. The first white child born in Radnor was John Jerman, Sr., November 12, 1684. Sarah, daughter of Stephen Evans, was the first girl born there. In the French and Indian war many Radnor men served, including eight young Friends, who on their safe return were “disowned” by the Society.

John Jerman, Jr., son of John Jerman, died in Radnor in the year 1769. A few days after his death the Pennsylvania Chronicle, in an obituary notice, spoke of him "as a gentleman well known for his astronomical calculations." Mr. Jerman had published an almanac.

John Morgan and wife Sarah Jones/Evans had one daughter Sarah and one son James by the year 1703 when they are mentioned in her father's will. They were probably married about 5 years by then, probably since before 1698. Sarah is said to maybe have been born 1773 which would make her 15 when they married.

*Note 3: H
ere is a note from Andy Holland which is very interesting about a James Morgan born about 1719 in PA and raised by a step mother Patience. I am waiting to hear where this story came from. I wonder why James is not mentioned in the Radnor wills if he is their son - so have thought about it for days. I think he is the son of James Morgan, mentioned in John Morgan Sr.'s will as a brother. Further I think he married the widow Patience after John Morgan Jr. died and that he already had a son James Jr.. The family of this James Morgan with step mother Patience seems to be the only source for her maiden name being Perminter.
Son of John and Sarah but raised by Patience, his stepmother. James migrated south some 40 miles, after his fathers death, to the Harford area in north Maryland. He found his first wife Elizabeth Walker and second wife Mary Davis among the followers of the St. George Parish. After the birth of his fourth child, James and family moved to North Carolina near the modern town of Liberty.
James became a very influential person in the area. He homesteaded some 600 acres of the Piedmont Grassland area for which he received title after the War of Revolution. In 1782 he sold the land and moved north some 20 miles near Greensboro, NC. where he purchased several smaller farms. He was one of the protesters (Regulator) against the tyrannical English taxation practices and a participant in the Battle of Alamance.
James sold his last landholding in 1811 after which nothing is known. His age would have been over 90 at this time. The sale of the lands in 1810 and 1811 may have been done by James Jr. after the death of his father.

________________________________________________________

Both of the John's children have been ignored and everyone has forced James Morgan of Durham Furnace (birth guestimated 1708-1710) on both John Morgans. One son James was actually born too late -1721- and married Ann Heacock. The other son James was born ca 1700 and was dead by 1744. He was not alive long enough to be James Morgan of Durham.

John Morgan of Radnor was probably born by 1666 to be a resident by 1686. Was he really a resident by 1686? or was it really 1693? He had a brother James who would probably been to old to be our James. That is unless you rethink it all and find out that there were 3 John Morgans in a row. Our James Morgan of Durham Furnace did not died till 1782. Among the men I discussed above there was no James Morgan who fit the description of James Morgan born about 1708, unless you count the brother James and take the assumption they were born later than we thought and were both sons of a third John Morgan who was a resident in 1686 !
